That’s a meaningful shift, because regulatory approval has long been the biggest bottleneck standing between lab-grown meat and your dinner plate.

What Lab-Grown Meat Actually Is

Cultivated meat starts with animal cells, usually taken from a small biopsy that doesn’t require killing the animal. Those cells are placed in a nutrient-rich liquid inside steel tanks called bioreactors, where they multiply and grow into muscle and fat tissue. The process is closer to brewing beer than to raising livestock. The end product is real animal tissue, genetically identical to conventional meat, just grown outside the animal’s body.

This is different from plant-based substitutes like veggie burgers, which mimic meat’s taste and texture using soy, pea protein, or mushrooms. Cultivated meat aims to be biologically the same thing, not a clever imitation.

Why Regulators Are Saying Yes

Regulatory agencies evaluate cultivated meat the way they’d evaluate any new food: checking for safety, verifying the production process is consistent, and confirming there’s nothing toxic or allergenic introduced along the way. Early approvals focused on chicken products, since chicken cells are relatively straightforward to grow. As more companies submit safety data and production records, agencies have a clearer template to follow, which speeds up review for the next applicant.

This is the normal pattern for new food technology. Once one country’s food safety body clears a product and nothing goes wrong, other countries gain confidence to follow. It happened with genetically modified crops decades ago, and it appears to be happening again here.

The Bigger Question: Can It Scale

Approval doesn’t mean abundance. Right now, cultivated meat is produced in relatively small batches and sold at a handful of restaurants or specialty grocers, often at a premium price. The real challenge is scaling production without the cost staying sky-high.

Growing cells at the volume needed to compete with a chicken farm requires enormous bioreactors, precise temperature and nutrient control, and a reliable supply of growth media, the nutrient broth cells feed on. That media has historically been the most expensive part of the process. Companies are working on cheaper, food-grade alternatives, and costs have already dropped significantly since the first cultivated products were made. But matching the price of conventional chicken or beef at grocery store volume is still a distant goal, not a near-term certainty.

What It Could Mean for Farming

If cultivated meat eventually reaches meaningful scale, the impact on traditional farming would likely be gradual rather than disruptive. Livestock farming supports a vast web of jobs, from feed producers to slaughterhouses to trucking, and that infrastructure doesn’t disappear just because a new product exists. Early cultivated meat is more likely to sit alongside conventional and plant-based options than to replace them outright, at least for the next decade.

That said, some farmers and industry groups have pushed back hard, lobbying for labeling rules or outright bans in certain regions. A few U.S. states have already restricted the sale of cultivated meat, showing that political and cultural resistance may slow adoption even where safety regulators have signed off.

What It Could Mean for Food Prices

In the near term, don’t expect cultivated meat to lower your grocery bill. It remains more expensive to produce than conventional meat, and that gap will take years to close, if it closes at all. The bigger price story may play out indirectly: if cultivated meat production scales up and reduces demand growth for feed crops and grazing land, it could ease some of the environmental and resource pressures that contribute to long-term price volatility in conventional meat markets, particularly beef.

There’s also a supply-chain argument in cultivated meat’s favor. Conventional meat production is vulnerable to disease outbreaks, droughts affecting feed crops, and climate-related disruptions to grazing land. A lab-based process, in theory, is less exposed to those specific risks, which could make it a more stable option over time, even if it starts out pricier.

What to Watch For

The next few years will likely bring more approvals, more products beyond chicken, and more debate over labeling, meaning how these products are described on packaging so shoppers know what they’re buying. Whether cultivated meat becomes a mainstream grocery item or stays a niche, higher-end product will depend less on regulatory approval, which is now clearing steadily, and more on whether companies can bring production costs down to something resembling everyday prices.

For now, the practical takeaway is simple: the legal path is opening up in more places, but the price and availability gap between lab-grown and conventional meat is still wide. If you see it on a menu or shelf, it’s a genuine curiosity worth trying, not yet a replacement for your weekly grocery routine.
